A warm welcome to The Nest
Starting somewhere new can bring questions for young people and their families.
The Nest offers a weekly day of support for young people in Years 1-9 who are finding aspects of school life difficult. Through caring relationships, outdoor experiences and practical activities, we help them build confidence and develop skills they can use at school and beyond.
We work alongside their school, with time to understand what helps them feel comfortable and ready to take part.

A day at The Nest
Each group has a dedicated base and Nest Education Leaders who get to know the young people taking part.
The day includes shared meals, practical activities and opportunities to reflect. Depending on the group’s programme, young people might cook, care for animals, explore nature, build shelters or make something together.
Activities are shaped around the group’s needs, with support to try, practise and build confidence.
For younger and older groups, experiences are adapted to their age and stage of development. Across both primary and secondary provision, the emphasis is on encouragement, relationships and achievable progress.

Preparing for the first day
Before the programme begins, we will share practical information through the agreed contact at your young person’s school or referring setting.
Helping them prepare
Talking about the setting, the adults they will meet and the activities they might try can help make the first day feel more familiar. Let us know about any worries so we can consider how best to support them.
Clothing and belongings
Much of our learning takes place outdoors. Young people should come ready for the weather, wearing comfortable clothing and suitable footwear that can get muddy. We will confirm any additional items they need to bring.
Food
Breakfast, lunch and snacks are included. Please make sure the referring school shares any allergies, dietary needs or relevant concerns before the placement begins.
Transport
Transport is included for the group pathway. Travel arrangements for individual placements need to be agreed separately.

Supporting your child
You know your young person in ways that others may not. Information about their interests, strengths, worries and helpful routines can make a difference to how we welcome and support them.
We work with their school or referring professional to understand these needs and agree relevant support.
Our leaders help young people recognise feelings, communicate needs, build relationships and grow in confidence. Progress and useful strategies are shared through the programme’s agreed review arrangements.
Safeguarding is central to our work. If you have a concern about a young person’s safety or wellbeing, please contact Ufton and ask to speak to the Safeguarding Team.
Family FAQ's and Next Steps
