Activities

Set Up Base

Participants work in small teams to design and build a temporary shelter or base using natural materials found in the environment (e.g., sticks, leaves, logs) and/or provided materials (e.g., tarpaulins, ropes). Teams must consider stability, weatherproofing, and use of resources.

Navigation

Participants will use natural materials like poles, ropes, and wooden stakes to design and build simple structures, such as rafts, bridges, or towers. This hands-on activity develops teamwork, problem-solving, and practical knot-tying skills while fostering creativity and resilience in an outdoor setting.

Fires and Outdoor Cooking

Participants will learn the essential skills for safely building and lighting a fire using natural materials. The activity covers fire safety, the basics of fire structures (such as tepee and log cabin designs) and techniques to ignite a fire without matches. Once the fire is lit, participants will cook a simple, delicious snack or meal while gaining an appreciation for outdoor survival and teamwork. Perfect for building confidence, resilience, and a sense of connection with nature.

Foraging

Discover the natural abundance of the season through a hands-on foraging experience. Learn to identify edible plants, fruits, nuts, or fungi while exploring their traditional uses and ecological roles. Participants will gain tips on responsible and sustainable foraging, connecting with nature in a mindful and practical way. This activity blends bushcraft skills with environmental awareness.

Tool Work

Engage in a hands-on bushcraft activity that introduces participants to the safe and effective use of basic tools, such as saws, knives, and mallets. Learn essential techniques for crafting with natural materials, including whittling or creating simple wooden items like tent pegs, beads, or mallets. This activity fosters fine motor skills, creativity, and an appreciation for traditional outdoor skills while emphasising safety and respect for tools and nature. Perfect for participants of all experience levels!
